“How do I know when my toddler is ready to potty train?”

As a parent, you may be wondering what the right time is to potty train toddlers. It’s a question that we hear quite often and unfortunately, there’s no “one size fits all” answer to when to potty train toddlers. The best you can do as the parent is to keep your eyes and ears open to signs that your child is ready to potty train.

Here are just a few indications that we look for when determining when to potty train toddlers. You child may exhibit one or more of these signs. The key is a parent is to notice them as they arise.

*Your toddler begins to develop some consistency in the instances they have bowel motions or pee.
*Is normally physically confident enough to walk, pick up the toilet seat, and lower and pull-up their pants.

*Has the ability to adhere to verbal instructions and vocally communicate desires.

*Displays curiosity about the process of mom or daddy using the bathroom.

*Is usually proficient at sitting quietly for a short period of time (2-3 minutes).

Again, you child may show one or more of these signs that we look for when deciding when to potty train toddlers. As stated before in several posts, the most important factor for success with this process is supporting your child in a loving way so they aren’t stressed. We truly feel that to potty train toddlers most effectively, it’s always important to encourage them in a positive way as they explore this new life skill.

“What are the signs of potty training readiness?”

While there are no formal guidelines for the age at which you should begin potty training toddlers, there are a few guidelines that will assist you in recognizing potty training readiness. As a parent, if you are receptive to these signs of potty training readiness, you may be able to seize an opportunity to introduce potty training to your toddler at a stage during which he or she will be the most interested in and open to the process.

The age at which to begin potty training toddlers can range from 18 months to 4 years of age. Your child will likely develop the necessary cognitive and physical skills for potty training readiness sometime during these ages. Listed below are some of the signs that we look for in assessing potty training readiness in toddlers. Your child may show a few or many of these indicators, but again, let your child’s interest in potty training guide the process.

Your toddler begins to develop some consistency in the times that they have bowel movements or urinate.

Is physically able to walk, lift the toilet seat, and lower and pull up his or her pants.

Is able to follow verbal commands and verbally communicate needs.

Shows interest in the process of mom or dad using the bathroom.

Is capable of sitting quietly for a short period of time (two or three minutes).

If your child is gaining a sense of independence and enjoying their accomplishments in other areas, that’s a good sign that they’ll be willing to try going potty by themselves. Again, when potty training toddlers, the most important aspect of assessing potty training readiness is determining when your toddler seems to be interested on learning to use the toilet.

I am hoping to start potty training my two and a half year old son soon but I am at a loss as to how to motivate him. We bought the potty together, read books, talked about it a lot and even purchased big boy underpants. My son is eager initially but he won’t stay seated on the potty for more than a few seconds. I have tried encouraging him with stickers, M&Ms, or other similar treats but he quickly loses interest. I have tried reading books to him while he sits and have even put a small basket of toys beside the potty for him to play with. Nothing is working. Could it be that he is just not ready? He exhibits all the signs of readiness but just won’t sit long enough for anything to happen. Any suggestions?

We used a timer, a small digital one that we let our son set (with help of course) we found he got really excited waiting for the timer to go off and would sit patiently, we built the length of time up gradually, starting with just 30 seconds and sitting him down every 15 minutes. After a couple of days he was so intrigued by the numbers counting down that he peed without realising and we showered him with praise and showed him what he did and he clicked that that is what the potty was for and after that we encourage him by playing “beat the clock”, setting the timer and asking him to pee before the time ran out.

I have this question may seem strange, but I'm potty training my 2 1 / 2 years and have given plenty of water, but I was wondering if is a beverage that should give you different? Should I give a little juice as well, which will help you go more often? I suspect most of the time goes soon they will receive the hang of it. Any other suggestions would be helpful. She showed all the signs of preparation and will be three to one and a half, and I know that you are more that loan, so it's not a problem. I could use some advice on the process, however.

it is not necessary for fill his place full of fluids to make him learn to use the bathroom. In fact, if you too could be damaged. too much water will dilute all vitamins and cause weight loss too much juice can be filled with too much sugar, and all that implies, and she can not eat enough food. Take what is potty for the first time in the morning, before bed, before and after naps, before and after meals and take a bath befor. You can run water in the sink or bathtub while she was in the bathroom too.

I read this somewhere. Well, my son is 13 months, and he keeps removing his, but I’m not sure if he’s ready for potty yet…
How’s your experience?
Nina Lee: “He just didn’t like wearing clothes, lol.”

How true… LOL
Rosie: “she draws with whats inside it as well”

Vunderful Idea! I shall teach my son that… and have his squirmish daddy change him.

my daughter did the same thing at 13 to 14 months.I introduced her to the potty & she was trained in week & we have never had bed wetting issues.all kids are different,I don’t think that there’s a set age to begin potty training.if he’s showing all of the signs then go for it,if he’s removing his nappy when he’s soiled that shows that he’s already learned that he does not like the feel of it on his skin,& if he’s waking up dry, a little trick that I did when training my boys was to put cereal like a fruit loop or cheerio in the toilet it gives them something to aim at & makes training a little more fun.
if you do decide to start training stay with it it confuses the child if you go back & forth.from my experience boys train better then girls
Good luck
