Mommy Potty Elmo Review

As you may know toddlers do not have muscle control over their bowel movements….and if your toddler is not ready then basically – mommy is training mommy to know when baby has to go, which isn’t a bad thing!!

But it is very time consuming and it could get very messy – with that said, I believe that your 18-month-old can be trained.  Try to introduce your toddler to the idea, like reading picture books and I got this Elmo doll. At first I wasn’t too sure how helpful Elmo would be, but I figured any help in the toilet / potty training process would be appreciated.

Plus Elmo was a great companion for my baby – he went everywhere…

What You Get:

Sesame Street Potty Elmo is a plush, battery-operated talking doll that measures 11 inches (6.1″ x 11.2″ x 15″). When you press his left hand, Elmo says several phrases including this one “Elmo’s thirsty.” Then you or your toddler should give Elmo a drink from his tiny, plastic, light-blue sippie cup. (The cup does not actually hold any liquids…it is for imaginative play. But when you press the cup inside Elmo’s mouth, he makes a gulping sound and says “Thank you.”

After Elmo will do 1 of 2 things – either says he’s still thirsty or that he needs to go to the potty. Also, there is no indication whether Elmo is doing a number 1 or 2 – except for the tinkling music when he is actually on the tiny potty chair. Potty Elmo comes with a plastic, light blue toilet – sit Elmo on his potty when he says “Oooooo, Elmo needs to use potty.” Elmo then hums a tune while he gets ready to go and after the tinkling music, you will hear a big “Tada” sound. Elmo congratulates him-self and offer words of encouragement to you or your toddler – naturally; he also makes a flushing sound.

Potty Elmo comes clothed in a T-shirt and a white pair of underwear that slide up and down, booties, a soft book, and potty-training tips. Elmo is intended for toddlers aged 18 months and up. Elmo requires 3 AA batteries to operate.

Toddlers Verdict:

Your toddler will adore Elmo – especially if they love him on TV, on their pajamas, or in the bathtub!!

My toddler was very excited as soon as she saw Potty Elmo & wanted to play with Elmo right away. I showed my toddler how to feed her little red fuzzy friend. She had no trouble holding the sippie cup near Elmo’s mouth, but she was unable to activate the gulping sound (pressing the cup into his mouth).

Honestly, I had a little trouble, too. You really need to push his head back with the cup.

Also I kept Elmo’s potty in our bathroom so that my toddler can grasp and really get the idea that Elmo has to pee. If Elmo needs a drink and/or needs to pee show your toddler how to sit him on the potty. When I tell her it’s time for her and Elmo to try to go to the potty…my toddler would eagerly sit Elmo on his potty and then sit on her potty seat, too.
Elmo’s voice sounds fairly clear and my toddler giggles when she hears his voice – you will too!! My toddler also enjoy feeding and playing with Elmo when he’s not in the bathroom with the potty.

My Verdict:

I think that this is such a neat little toy for toddlers that are Elmo fans…that are getting ready to go through the potty training phase. It’s proven to be extremely helpful – familiarizing your toddler with the idea. I started out trying to use a stand-alone potty around 16 months – my toddler quickly regressed (gave it 2 thumbs down).

So, knowing the love & adoration for Elmo I had to go out and get the combination an Elmo potty chair with the doll… has made the experience a lot easier. The reason that my toddler regressed was because I haven’t been as vigilant about taking my toddler to the bathroom as I should have been…I know – I’m lazy…diapers are way easier.

Now each time, we ask Elmo if he needs to go, feed him his sippie cup, place him on his potty next to my toddler – while my toddler is sitting on the toilet, and the two try to do their thing. Before we had the doll, my toddler would just shake her head no when I asked her if she needed to go to the potty…or if I sat my toddler on the toilet – she would immediately scoot her butt off of the seat…Very Frustrating!!

But now, when I ask if Elmo has to go – the answer is almost always yes. Once we’re in the bathroom, it’s a lot easier to get her on the toilet seat and she’ll happily sit there while Elmo goes a few times. What’s great about Potty Elmo is that it’s very encouraging…there are times when Elmo doesn’t have to go but he’ll sit on the potty and try.

Elmo will hum his successful song and then say “Hmm, nothing is happening….Oh well, maybe next time.” It’s silly, but it adds a bit of fun to a necessary but not too entertaining task.

There are quite a few phrases Elmo says so it won’t get too annoying – Elmo’s voice is fairly clear and definitely recognizable. There is no volume control but the sound isn’t too loud. I’m not sure how long the batteries will hold up since we’ve only had him for a few weeks. There is an on/off switch beneath his tight-sticking Velcro back.

Elmo’s legs hang limply like any other stuffed doll, but his arms are adjustable (when you put his arms up they stay up basically). Unfortunately he is not able to hold his own sippie cup. The one thing I don’t like is that his eyes bug out a little too much. It’s a little weird looking how his eyes sit on top of his head.

Potty Elmo is surface washable only – Do not put in washer or dryer. I washed the plastic accessories with soap and water. You can also spray Elmo with some Febreze (Allergen Reducer) – that does a nice job of freshening them up.

If you do not like Elmo on TV – more than likely you are not going to like this doll…but I have no quarrel with Elmo. He’s a cute monster that my toddler loves and adores.

OVERALL

So far, I’m very happy with Potty Elmo & my baby understands that Elmo needs to go after he drinks from his sippie cup.  My toddler seems to make the connection between Elmo sitting on his potty and her sitting on the toilet / potty. So make sure that you have patience to go through this and do not get mad at your toddler if he / she do not do anything in the potty / toilet…it takes time. Remember that when toilet training toddlers every child is different…your toddler might start at 16 months or later it all depends on when your toddler is ready – not when you are ready.

Successful Potty Elmo Song:

It goes something like this -

“Elmo is so proud today
He’s learning to use the potty
Elmo can do it and so can you…then there will be a [Flushing sound]
Elmo went in the potty!”

[Sung to the tune of "All around the Mulberry Bush/Pop Goes the Weasel"]

When Elmo doesn’t make it to the potty in time, he says:

“Oops! Elmo didn’t get to the potty. That’s OK. Elmo will try again later.”
