Mommy Toilet Training Toddlers Guide & Simple Tips…. pt. 2

by Admin on January 13, 2010

Here is the technique I suggest parents to follow:

Buy cotton training pants they are better for your child – you want them to grasp the concept the feel of cotton.

First, do not use disposable training pants for example, “Huggies” or “Pull-Ups”. They are too much like a diaper and when your toddler urinates it will absorb the wetness and this tends to confuse them. Always…do what you think is right for your toddler.

Suggestion use plain cotton training underpants these training pants can be compared to normal underwear. But they have a little extra padding in the crotch area. You can usually find them in any store that sells children clothing.

I went to Target and bought some Dora the Explorer training panties for my daughter. I recommend that you buy approximately 9-12 pairs of the underpants and several pairs of nylon (plastic) pants. This can be worn over the cotton underpants. It would be wise to use underpants with the plastic pants over them; this will help to protect your child’s clothing. But of course the choice is yours!

Make a decision to when you want to begin potty training your toddler. Clear the calendar and be sure that there is nothing traumatic going on in you or your child’s life. This can give you and your child a late start and potty training needs your full attention.

Enlighten your little one they are going to start using “big boy” or “big girl” underwear, or whatever term you like to use. It is also important, that you are able to follow in a consistent method.  If your toddler attends preschool, make sure the caregiver(s) understand your way of potty training. This is what you are doing and you require them to follow the same method. When you are away from home or when you have company stay consistent and follow through.

Be aware that your toddler may still wet their underpants and soil them occasionally. Accidents will happen so be prepared for a lot of soiled laundry. As a matter of fact, this may happen over and over again. Just remember to remain calm and patient because very few children will be accident free in the early stages of potty training. Trust me my daughter had her share of accidents, but she is a big girl now!

When your toddler tells you or you have noticed that they have wet their pants. Immediately take them into the bathroom, and remove the wet underpants and clothing. Put them on the potty; explain to them in your own words the importance of remembering to go to the potty or in the big toilet.

Help your toddler understand this because you do want them to be confused – meaning that you do want to just say, “Oh no, Sally Joe! This cannot happen anymore!” “Let mommy know when you got to go, please Sally Joe.” and then Sally Joe will be back into diapers and pull-ups.

Why do it twice when this can be done once and the right way.

Suggestion start  monitoring the amount of liquids that your child intake. If say for instance after breakfast; allow up to 15 to 30 minutes to past (enough time for their little bodies to digest their food and fill their bladder) tell them sit on the potty- be stern while doing this. Make sure they have a sipper cup full of juice so they can sit and sip- this will keep them hydrated while they are sitting on the potty.

Do something to occupy their little mind; put them in front of the t.v. or give them a book to read. The newspaper worked for me! This way they can get used to sitting on it or the feel of it. Remember that this is not punishment so do not stick them in a corner.

Do not allow them to get up – stay firm. If you have to sit there and watch Sponge-Bob or Dora the Explorer with them-whatever it takes. Monitor the time that have been sitting there-they have small bodies and some work faster than others- just let them know that you are there.

All done…That is Mom’s “Big Boy” or “Big Girl”!

Have your child flush or watch you empty the pot in the toilet; this will help them grasp the concept of # 1 and # 2 goes in the toilet, preferably if they went in the potty. I suggest that you use this step because what is the point of flushing an empty toilet.

After flushing, go to the sink and wash your hands together.

Hand washing should be done; this will teach your toddler great personal hygiene. By flushing the toilet and washing hands, you are getting your child ready what happens when you go potty. These are steps you should repeat over and over, in a consistent pattern, until your child is fully potty trained.

If your child is terrified to be placed on the toilet, or if continues soiling their underpants for days, with no urination or bowel movements in the toilet, then your child needs a little more patience and time-they may not be ready for potty training at this time.

Add activities that your child may find fun, stop potty training for a while, and resume again when your child might be more ready.
