Toilet Training Accidents….What A Parent To Do?
Mothers I know that you exhale once your toddler learns how to use the potty all by themselves, but look forward to occasional accidents and near misses. Here are some helpful tips on handling and preventing unwanted wet underpants.
Be prepared for when those times your toddler may have an accident in their pants. Say for instance your toddler has frequent accidents – use absorbent underwear. They are super absorbent, 100% cotton; soft against your toddler’s skin- this will give them that uncomfortable wet feeling. Which, this will help encourage your toddler to keep his or her pants dry. Always keep extra pairs of underwear and clothing handy, especially when your toddler is away from home.
Remain calm and practice patience….toddlers don’t have accidents just to irritate us. Think about it….today we make mistakes everyday; in life sometimes more often than others. So, don’t embarrass them by scolding or disciplining. So explain to them in your own words the importance of remembering to go to the potty. Take it slow…relax this is a long process and your child needs to sit on the potty until they have completely emptied their bladder – this actually help prevent accidents.
Timely reminders….accidents usually happen when toddlers are participating in activities that are more interesting….that is why being consistent needs to be in forced while potty training. To beat this, just make regular potty trips. For instance, when you get up in the morning the first thing in the morning, immediately put your toddler on the potty.
This should be done after each meal and snack, before getting in the car – day time potty training. Night potty training can also be done… before going to bed have your toddler sit on the potty. So, you would just have your toddler sit on the potty while you’re washing dishes or other chores. Look out for “gotta go potty” signs, such as fidgeting, squirming, or holding their private area.
Mothers toilet training is not a easy task to do and when you have a toddler that has accidents just remember that it is normal maintain a positive attitude. This is a lesson that you are teaching them and they will use this life lesson forever so make sure that you that your toddler was not born with this knowledge and you cannot expect them to learn this accident free.
