Many parents that start out toilet training toddlers do not know what they can do to help their toddler through toilet training. As all moms know that this is a tedious project that we have to go through. Well I take that back, some mom’s cannot relate! Anyway we have to get mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared. This takes a lot out of us – especially if we have to go to  9 to 5′er!

So below are a list of thins that you can do to help your toddler out of diapers.

  • Teach your toddler potty lingo.
  • Try saying ” pee – pee ” when they pee  or ” poop ” when they have a bowel movement – when I changed his diaper or pull-up
  • Provide a potty chair for training.
  • Make it easier and buy a potty chair that your toddler can access…
  • Praise your toddler on a job well done (clap, use positive phrases) and incentives (watch t.v., read books, playing potty with a doll; while sitting on the potty). Avoid too many distractions.
  • Start toilet training only when the child seems interested and willing.
  • Every child start at different times and ages so watch out for readiness signs.
  • Ask your toddler quite a few times throughout the day and evening if they need to go to the bathroom.
  • Be prepared to hear “No” – Especially when he’s playing and do not want to be disturbed. They are just being stubborn and that is when you stay consistent and do not let them get away with that behavior.
  • Establish a regular pattern of toileting: in the morning, before and after meals, and at bedtime.
  • This can differ between you and I so do whatever is best for you – at least that is what I did. Make sure that you stick to a schedule so that you are not confusing my child.
  • Monitor fluid intake, mainly at bedtime. Allowed your toddler to sit on the potty before bedtime after they have done a number one or two then put them done with a juice cup for the night.
  • Delay training if the child does not seem to catch on or does not seem interested. Every toddler has their moments – that is why you should remain calm and patient.
  • Expect accidents. Do not harshly punish accidents; this is normal throughout potty training.
  • Do not blame, threaten or demoralize your toddler-remember we all have our own way of learning things.
  • Do not insist that a child remain on a potty seat longer than 5 to 10 minutes. They may build up an association of unpleasantness with the bathroom or potty seat which may cause potty training regression.
  • Follow their cue, if they seem more interested in the large toilet than the small potty chair.
  • Use same sex adult modeling when possible. If a father is there and you have a boy the father would be best and vice versa for a mother.  No father for the young man…no worries….he can sit until later on and he is able to stand.
  • If the child has an accident, remain calm. Sometimes accidents happen… let them take part in cleaning up….make sure that you are explaining why this must happen so they can understand. This will not hurt them only help.
  • Storing clean underwear near the potty may be beneficial just in case an accident happens.
  • Colorful underwear may be motivating and easy-to-remove clothing is recommended.

Potty training is part of life – and your child needs to understand and learn about the body and its functioning. Parents our attitude towards the genitals area is natural. Explain this to your toddler the importance of taking responsibility for bodily needs. Answer questions in a relaxed manner. Potty training needs to be approached in a calm and positive manner.

While potty training it is a good idea and time to teach your toddler the correct name for body parts and their functions. Parents your main goal is to teach your toddler that all parts of the body are good, and body functions are natural. All these are good ideas that you can take in consideration about potty training your toddler successfully.
